The gambler's crop

Frank's words of experience about growing cauliflower echo long in the memory.

During my 15 seasons of cauliflower growing I have lost them in most ways possible. I've had crows pull them up fishing for wireworms, rabbits bite off the growing tips of new transplants.  I've lost mature curds which froze in persistent -10C, I've lost them to weeds which escaped the hoe in wet summers.  I've had them too big through late harvest of wide spacing and too small through the 2012 deluge.  This year we have lost many through the prolonged warmth of this autmumn which brought them fast and early. Too fast for our markets.

In spite of this we have always had some to sell and have maintained a reputation as growers of fine cauli !
